One Day

I keep waiting and hoping, delaying a post here because I want my next post to be that we've broken ground on our new house.

We have NOT broken ground on our new house.

The waiting, waiting, and more waiting has tested my patience to a new level.

This is the first time (maybe only time) that we've built a custom home and I really had no idea how LONG the entire process from start to finish would take.  I mean, I heard the builder when he said the design process could take xxxx amount of time, the loan process takes blah blah blah time, and the building process takes way too freakin' long xxxx time.

But really, I had NO clue.  Naive.

So where are we in this long process?
  • Phase 1- design a floor plan (DONE- woot woot!)
  • Phase 2- design outside elevation (DONE- woot woot!)
  • Phase 3- securing construction loan financing (we've turned everything in and now we're WAITING on a closing date, so almost done, fingers and toes crossed)
  • Phase 4- break ground and let the builder run with it (NOT DONE AT ALL)
The husband and I talk longingly of all the things we can't wait to do/decorate/build/accessorize/socialize, etc in our new house.

I'm super excited to have the kitchen of my dreams and I'm already planning meals and kitchen escapades in my head.  I can't wait for the kids to have a dedicated play space and their own bedrooms.  I can't wait to have a bad-ass backyard with a wraparound porch, outdoor kitchen and the best play area our brains can dream up.  I can't wait to have windows all the way around, letting in precious light all day long.  I can't wait to pick out flooring, paint, hardware, countertops and the like.  I can't wait to see how our furniture looks in our new house.

Our house is our home and we love to share it with those we care and love.

I can't wait to resume our normal *invite everyone over at the last minute for a BBQ* lives, hosting every single family birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, and Father's Day celebrations and everything in between.

That's what we did at our last house and we'll do it again in our new house.

One day.

We are SO in the same place right now. I've typed many comments on your home-building posts, only to delete them at the last moment.

We live just a couple hours south of you, in a teeny tiny little town... but we're building outside of town on our own land. And it's taking FOR-FREAKING-EVER.

We designed our house (first on graph paper, then in Excel!) and it's been made into blueprints. We made changes, and now we're waiting on our building to re-bid the job.

The kicker? We just found out our fourth baby will be here in SEVEN. MONTHS.

So... no pressure.

Our first house (which we sold in March) was also custom-built, but it took 3 months. We built in a neighborhood on a lot the builder owned. Totally different.

This time, we had to build a road, put in water, electricity and septic, and all that takes time.

I'm going nuts right along with you.

And dreaming.

I sometimes dream of building our own house. But then all the challenges come to mind and I think I just don't have it in me. We're far from that point in our lives right now, though. I can't wait to see what you do in the new place though.

Lisa,

Praying for all of this home building stuff to settle soon so you can start your fab parties again :)

I'm hoping and praying it goes faster than you think. I know how badly you want to be in your new home...

Ugh. I hear you, girl. It's so hard when nothing is in your control at this point. But...your house will get done and it will be spectacular. And then I'm coming to visit.

As the wife of an architect I know that it is a very frustrating process, but it will be wonderful when it is all done! Then you can have a hooker retreat and invite all of us down to see your wonderful house!
